Abstract
The article examines the process of formation of the intellectual class in the information society, the peculiarities of its origin and reproduction in Russia. The analysis of the works of foreign and domestic sociologists devoted to the problem of identification of the intellectual class, on the basis of which its structural model is built, is carried out. The main criteria proposed are: orientation to quality education, readiness for productive intellectual work, ability to new ideas, self-organization in teams, orientation to innovative entrepreneurship. These criteria are applied to modern university students to identify the degree of their compliance with the class of intellectuals. Summarizing the results of the author's sociological research allowed us to state: the main qualities that determine the intellectual class are formed in different categories of students with different intensity. The absence of practically useful results from intellectual activity reduces motivation.
